Speaker:

Tony Sneed

Abstract:

WCF Data Services combines patterns and libraries that enable any data store to be exposed as a REST-ful service, addressable with URIs that clients can interact with using standard HTTP verbs, such as GET and POST. WCF Data Services also has a number of advanced features, which allow you to control things like how query results are merged into previously cached objects, and eager-loading related entities. In this session you will learn how to leverage these features for more fine-grained control and to create query interceptors which allow you to perform logging, validation, and authorization. You will also learn how to manage concurrency among multiple users and expose services using custom data sources.

Bio:

Anthony Sneed is an instructor and author for DevelopMentor, where he teaches numerous courses on C# and .NET. He has authored two courses: Exploring .NET, which surveys the principal pillars of .NET (EF/LINQ, WCF, WPF/SL , RIA Services, MVVM, MEF), and Entity Framework 4.0 with Data Services, which takes a deep dive into the latest version of Microsoft's flagship ORM product.

Tony has over 15 years experience in software development, focusing primarily on distributed application architectures. Prior to joining DevelopMentor, he worked as a lead developer and architect for the Walt Disney Company, where he designed enterprise-wide services for application security.

Tony has appeared at Microsoft's TechEd conference and is a frequent speaker at developer groups throughout the country. He has written articles for various technical publications, including MSDN Magazine, and shares his technical expertise on .NET via his blog. You can follow him on Facebook and Twitter.

When it comes to Enterprise development, best patterns and practices are more a necessity than something good to have. This talk would go through some of those best practices with focus on some of the tools quintessential for success on MVC applications. It will also incorporate some real world scenarios and different ways to solve them as well as building modular solutions with separation of concerns leading to scalable apps.

Abstract:

Building a dynamic website involves a number of different technologies, including some sort of database, some web application framework, html, css and javascript. Some developers are good at all of these but most are just familiar with a few (if any). Full Stack Web Day is here to give you guidance on getting started with all of these technologies. Comfortable with ASP.NETand Sql Server? Come get help with Html, Css and Javascript. You spend all day designing websites but don't know how to get started with the stuff that your developers use? Come get an introduction to ASP.NET MVC and Sql Server. Or are you a developer who hasn't used any of these? If you are, here is your chance to get a one-day exposure to the full stack. Note that this event is not about web design. I am a developer and not a designer, as you could probably tell from looking at this site for about 15 seconds. During the event you will see enough about Css and Javascript to start learning how to implement your own designs or the designs of others.

Speaker:

Joseph Baggett

Abstract:

The purpose of this presentation is to introduce an overview about code generation practices in project development. Code generation is an underused and misunderstood practice, which can be used with any technology and virtually any ideology, especially if your architecture follows a pattern. During this presentation, demonstrations of how to retrieve metadata and how to create your own object model will be shown. The demonstrations will showcase a variety of code generation tools and different technologies. His presentation emphasizes best practices and tips.

Bio:

Joseph Baggett is an INETA speaker and he holds various Microsoft certifications. Joseph's knowledge includes a plethora of different technologies and practices, but his passion is code generation in project development as it is technology agnostic.

He has a master's degree and enjoys evangelizing code generation. Other passions include martial arts, bike riding, building electronic components, and playing videos games.

Although the Agile Manifesto professes that we value individuals and interactions over processes and tools, much of the emphasis of agile has been on processes and tools! The speaker focuses long overdue attention to the other half of the manifesto, in particular “Individuals and Interactions”. Before you leave the conference, take a break from the nuts and bolts discussions and spend some time learning about why we humans behave the way we do as both individuals and as groups, and learn some strategies for capitalizing on everyone’s strengths. How can teams maximize productivity and efficiency while dealing with the “human condition”. We will navigate such treacherous topics as communication, behavioral styles, motivation, dealing with change, and much more.

Abstract:

Agile teams can’t afford to wait until the end of a project to worry about performance. A successful agile team knows that non-functional requirements are just as important as functional requirements and formulates a definition of done that takes those requirements into account. This session will discuss how load and performance testing fits within an agile project and how to use Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate to determine whether your application will withstand the load of a production environment.

Topics Covered:

Performance testing in an agile environment

Formulating a performance testing plan

Implementing load tests in Visual Studio 2010

Evaluating load test results and behaviors

Allen Hurst is a Principal Consultant and the Assistant Director of Rural Sourcing at Improving Enterprises. As a committed Agilist and Certified ScrumMaster, Allen has spent his career learning, working, leading, and mentoring in a variety of environments, striving to recreate the positive experiences and learn from the negative ones. Along the way, Allen has found a fondness for continuous improvement, Agile values and practices, rapid delivery of quality working software, and well-designed object-oriented systems. Allen is a Computer Science graduate from Texas A&M, the leader of the Aggieland .NET User’s Group, an avid practitioner of GTD, and a producer of Improving Podcasts. You can learn a little more about Allen at ahurst.com

With video games, sports, and school, Long Bio built his love for challenge and competition. Am I the best at what I do? No. But I learn to accept failure, to learn and improve from my mistakes, and to keep on fighting. Speaking of fighting, I am a Fightin’ Texas Aggie class of 2008! I initially chose to go to A&M not because of its tradition, my friends, or a girl, but for my education and my career in engineering.

Abstract:

Getting early stakeholder feedback and releasing low defect software is critical to successful projects. Microsoft invested heavily in test tools with the Visual Studio 2010 release and continues test tool innovation with Visual Studio 11 that allows the team to get early feedback. Come learn about what is possible today and in the future concerning manual testing, test automation, test management, end user feedback, and lab management. This session can make an immediate impact on how you test your software and help you prepare for the next release of Visual Studio.

Bio:

Chris believes that effective software development is achieved through understanding the business opportunity, knowledge of current technology, and use of appropriate software development processes. Chris has consulted with companies in industries including Communications, Energy, Healthcare, Real Estate and Retail to propose, design, and implement custom solutions involving enterprise grade messaging, collaboration, and integration.

Currently Chris is primarily focused on Application Lifecycle Management and works as a Developer Technology Specialist for Microsoft, helping companies understand how to improve their ability to deliver software.

Abstract:

As developers, we all have our favorite utilities, some used occassionally and then there are others that we refuse to work without. We might not use all of them everyday, but a good developer should know his options when the need arises. In this session, we’ll discuss the tools, tips and tricks that can make you much more productive as a .Net developer.

Bio:

Latish is a software consultant and has been working with Microsoft .Net and related technologies for more than 7 years. He did his Masters in Computer Science from University of Denver. In 2008, he moved from Denver to Dallas and has fallen in love with the technical community here. He learned about the brilliant folks at Improving Enterprises while attending user groups, and identified with their goal of continuously Improving. He leads the Dallas CSharp SIG and also presents at user groups and conferences. He enjoys playing a game of ping pong every now and then and is always up for learning and trying out new things. He continues to live in Dallas with his beautiful wife and talking about himself in third person.

Abstract:

IT people and the businesses they serve have long suffered from a chasm of misunderstanding, mistrust, and a fundamental lack of ability to relate. Agile management methods give us tools to align IT projects with what our users say they want. But that brings dangers of building “nice to haves” instead of what’s really needed. So how do we have a meeting of the minds on what’s really important? And how do we share a vision for what’s technically possible? How do we make IT a business partner instead of a service bureau that’s scary to work with? In this talk we explore underlying issues that cause the IT/business divide, ways we can communicate better and work more closely, and paint a vision of a Business/IT partnership that can change ourselves, our companies, and the world for the better.

Bio:

Todd Girvin co-founded Improving Enterprises in August, 2004 and now heads the company’s Microsoft Technology Practice. He is a long-time entrepreneur and consultant, architecting and building software systems, coaching and training scores of companies in agile methods and developer best practices. Mr. Girvin contributes to the technical direction of the company and to the developer community at large through public speaking and co-organizing AgileDotNet, and by consulting with customers regarding business, technology, and team solutions.
